One of the most common questions I get in regard to brand preference is “what is the best brand” or “what is your brand preference”. Although we often offer a specific equipment due to its high-quality and lengthy extended warranty, or applicable rebates my most common response is that the installation is far more important than the brand of equipment. This is a sentiment that over years in the industry I have yet to come to a different conclusion. A bad installation can shorten the lifespan of an air conditioner or furnace by many years and proper installation can help the homeowner capitalize on years of comfort while operating the equipment at the highest level of efficiency possible.

A few questions to ask yourself or your contractor:

• How long is the labor warranty ( this is the warranty provided by the contractor rather than the manufacturer); if the warranty is not as long as others, why might that be?
• What is your process for fitting pipe? Installers should be reaming pipe and only brazing the pipes while using nitrogen to prevent fouling of the insides of the piping
• What certifications and licensing do your employees have?
• How do you determine what is the best size of air conditioner or furnace to use for my home ( the wrong answer is “we size based off current sizing or square footage of the home”, the correct answer is “we provide a load calculation for every home that we install equipment for”)
• What precautions does your company take to protect my home in the process of installing our new furnace?

By asking these questions you can get a good idea about whether the installing company has quality and comfort in mind or if they are there to make a quick buck without provide a PROfessional experience.
